How to Make Your Website Look Good on Mobile
WebsitesThere's a scene that repeats itself at almost every small business. The owner checks their website on the office computer, it looks fine, and they assume it's ready. Meanwhile, eight out of ten people visiting it are doing so from a phone, on a screen six times smaller, with fingers instead of a mouse, and often on mobile data instead of wifi. That majority is looking at a version of the site the owner almost never opens.
Why mobile is a different experience, not just a smaller one
A visitor on a computer is usually seated, with time and the intent to research. A visitor on a phone is out on the street, in line at the bank, or in a parking lot, and is looking for one of three things: the phone number, the address or the price. If your site makes them work through three clicks and a form to get it, they leave. Not because the site looks bad, but because it didn't give them what they were looking for in the first ten seconds.
On top of that, Google evaluates your site's mobile version to decide how to rank you, not the desktop one. A site that works well on a computer and poorly on a phone doesn't just lose the visitors who already showed up: it also loses ranking against competitors who got this right.
What to check right now from your phone
- Open your site on mobile data, not wifi, and count the seconds until something useful shows up. If it takes more than three, half your visitors are already gone.
- Check whether the phone number is a button that dials when tapped. If it has to be copied and pasted, you're losing calls over a detail that takes two minutes to fix.
- Try filling out your contact form with one hand. If the fields are tiny or the keyboard covers what you're typing, nobody is going to finish it.
- Verify that you never need to zoom to read anything. If you have to spread your fingers to make out a piece of text, the font is too small.
- Check that nothing spills off the sides of the screen. A table or image that forces horizontal scrolling breaks the reading experience completely.
- Look for the WhatsApp button. If it's not visible without scrolling, in Mexico you're giving up the channel most of your customers prefer to write on.
This check takes ten minutes and requires no technical knowledge. The important part is doing it on a real phone, with a street connection, not in a computer browser's simulator, where everything loads instantly and everything looks fine.
If you've never opened your site from your phone out on the street, you don't know the version most of your customers see.
The mistakes that cost the most
The most expensive one is image weight. A photo taken with a phone weighs several megabytes, and a page with six of those unoptimized takes forever to load on mobile data. It's the most common problem and also the easiest to fix: compressing images usually cuts load time in half without changing anything else.
The second is pop-ups. A cookie notice, a promotion and a chat widget that all open at once leave the visitor hunting for the X on a six-inch screen. Many never find it and close the tab entirely. On mobile, every element that covers the content costs visitors directly.
The third is the menu. A menu with fifteen dropdown options works on a wide screen and is a maze on a phone. The mobile version needs fewer options, not the same ones stacked up: contact, services, and little else. Everything beyond that can be reached from the content itself.
If your check turns up three or more of these problems, the fix isn't a patch but a rebuild of the mobile version, and it's worth solving from the ground up. A site designed from day one for the phone, like the ones we build under Websites, isn't an adaptation of the desktop version: it's the primary version, and the computer one is the one that adapts. That change in order is what separates a site that converts from one that just exists.
