What to Do If Your Competitors Rank Above You on Google

Websites
July 30, 2026

It is an uncomfortable and very common moment. You search Google for what you sell, in your city, and before your business come three competitors. Some are smaller than you, have been around less time, and are not necessarily doing better work. The normal reaction is to assume they are paying to be there. Sometimes they are, but in most cases the reason is something else entirely, and it can be fixed.

First, tell apart what you are actually looking at

A search results page has three distinct zones, and each is won in a different way. At the top are the ads, marked as sponsored, and you get there by paying. Then comes the map with local businesses, which you win with a well-built Google Business profile and reviews. And below that are the organic results, which you win with content and a well-built site.

Many owners see a competitor at the top and assume they would have to pay to compete, when in reality the one they need to catch up to is the one on the map, which is free and where most clicks happen in local searches. Knowing which zone each competitor is beating you in completely changes what needs to be done.

The most common causes, and all of them are fixable

  • The Google Business profile is incomplete: no hours, no photos, wrong category, or an outdated address.
  • There are barely any reviews, or the ones that exist are two years old and none has a reply.
  • The site never mentions the city or area you operate in, so Google does not know where to place you.
  • The pages talk about the business instead of what people search for. Nobody searches for integrated solutions; they search for the service by its common name.
  • The site loads slowly on mobile, where most local searches happen.
  • There are no separate pages per service, everything lives on one page that cannot rank for anything specific.

None of these require an advertising budget. They are structural and content issues, and fixing them tends to move rankings within weeks. A well-built website solves almost all of these from the design stage, because they are handled from birth instead of needing patches later.

Most businesses that do not show up on Google do not have a budget problem. They have a site that does not say what they do or where they do it.

Study whoever is beating you

It is the most useful exercise and almost nobody does it. Open the site of the competitor ranking above you and check what they have that you do not. How many service pages they have. Whether they mention the city and neighborhoods they work in. How many reviews they have accumulated and whether they respond to them. Whether they have articles answering the questions people ask before buying.

The difference is almost never sophisticated. It is that they have eight specific pages and you have one general one. It is that they have sixty reviews and you have four. These are differences in accumulated work, not talent or budget, and that is exactly why they can be closed.

What to expect timeline-wise

It is worth being honest about this, because it is where people get frustrated the most. The Google Business profile and reviews can move the map within a matter of weeks. Organic results take three to six months of consistent work, because Google needs to see that the site is maintained and that the information is reliable.

That is why the order matters. First, what delivers quick results: a complete profile, reviews, and service pages that include the city. Then the deeper work, which is content that answers what your customers ask before buying. Starting backward is the most common reason a business feels like it invested in its site and nothing happened.
